Struggling with the proper word for this situation
I'm writing a short story about a journalist and a politician. I have the journalist being assigned by his employer to write a hit piece on the politician, but the journalist wants to go above and beyond to "better" things. As the story is of no consequence other than showing the difference between the journalist and the politician, I'd like to use the world "sabotage" in this case, but my research has led me to be stuck in the "attempt to ________" part of the definition.
I would like the word to fit the situation: "The journalist went above and beyond, sabotaging the piece."
