I have the journalist being assigned by his employer to write a hit piece on the politician, but the journalist wants to go above and beyond to "better" things. As the story is of no consequence other than showing the difference between the journalist and the politician, I'd like to use the world "sabotage" in this case, but my research has led me to be stuck in the "attempt to ________" part of the definition. I would like the word to fit the situation: "The journalist went above and beyond, sabotaging the piece." A: I think the correct word is subvert: Merriam Webster defines it as: to overthrow or overthrow completely or make ineffective I used to think that this applied to newspapers, but the following may give you some insight: USA Today defines it as: to cast or cast oneself as the opposite of what one is in fact or in appearance, as in a political campaign Note that I'm not suggesting that the above definitions are correct, only that they are similar to the meaning of sabotage. A: I don't think that "subvert" is a suitable term for this. It can mean "to reject or reverse a doctrine, position, etc., esp. under the guise of its opposite" "Sabotage" has a more connotative, pejorative meaning. sabotage: to use false information to prevent something from happening, as by spreading false rumors or withholding information A: "Sabotage" may be appropriate if you consider the definition of "sabotage" as "to defeat or undermine by treachery or deceit" If your newspaper is "hiring" this politician to the point where a journalist is be359ba680
